Patrick Dempsey 2
Patrick Dempsey wasn’t the first adorkable guy, but he was the first one to turn it into a marketable brand. Of course now everybody thinks Patrick Dempsey has suddenly turned into a heart throb, but re-watching his eighties movies to cap these pics it struck me that he already was a kind of a sex symbol, albeit one that mothers in the eighties must have felt safe sending their tween daughters (and sons!) to the movies to see on Saturday afternoons. If you look at these movies Patrick’s nerdiness and innocence and sexuality all intertwine with plots of his movies in a unique way. While every young male movie character in the eighties, hapless dorks and chiseled-jawed jocks alike, were trying to get laid, Patrick Dempsey is the only one I can think of where all his movies actually played up the guy’s sex appeal.

First off let me just say, what a GREAT post! Definitely one of your highly anticipated ones! Couldn’t agree more on Dempsey’s sex appeal. So far I’ve only seen “Some Girls”, but now I’m looking forward to visit the lean adorkable side of him, especially in “Lover Boy”. I swear he couldn’t get anymore leaner than this! And eww Kirstie Alley.
Yeah he’s lucky he didn’t make “Lover Boy” a couple years later. He would have got a permanent back injury from dipping Kirstie Alley.
And I remember that scene of Patrick Dempsey washing the car with his shirt open in “Can’t Buy Me Love” as being a ’special’ moment from my early adolescence.
I’d forgotten how adorkable he actually was! Anthony Michael Hall was just plain a dork. Robert Downey was coked out and way too skinny (albeit with beautiful eyes and a sexy voice). I think you’re right, Psi… Patrick Dempsey IS the “OA” (Original Adorkable).
Speaking of Patrick Dempsey… He has that new movie coming out in a couple weeks. Patrick Dempsey cap opportunities aside, there might be some Kevin McKidd cap opportunities (Scottish red-head, Square… SCOTTISH RED-HEAD!!!!).
Oh gosh, “Can’t Buy Me Love” — I vaguely remember loving that movie…

I always loved the young skinny Patrick Dempsey. Those broad shoulders, that shock of hair, and the innocent sexiness all added up for me. I’ve always been a “thin” fan anyway, perhaps as I have always been thin myself.
I actually prefer him thinner than the filled out version of today. I am still surprised that he has become such a sex symbol for the ladies…never thought that would happen. I miss the boyish, almost impish version, but we all do get older and change, don’t we?
